Koh chang is s beautiful, green and mountainous island situated in Trat Province near the Cambodian border in Eastern Thailand. It is the second largest island in Thailand and lies in a group of 47 islands that have been awarded National Park status due to pristine rain forest and marine life. Ning other nearby islands offer accommodation including Koh Maak, Koh Wai and Koh Kood.
Development on the islands is largely limited to coastal areas due to forest protection and mountainous terrain. Despite being only 300km from Bangkok the region remains relatively undeveloped in comparison to the commercialisation of many other parts of Thailand.
The great beaches, impressive waterfalls and stunning scenery together with a choice of accommodation and entertainment that ranges from basic to real luxury ensure that there will be something of interest to visitors on all budgets. Activities include good diving, water sports and snorkeling, hill trekking, elephant jungle trekking and exploring the islands by kayak, cycle and motorbike. There are interesting local villages to visit and boat trips are available to explore or stay at other islands in the group. The town of Trat is the administrative centre of the region and stopping point for buses from Bangkok and Cambodia. It is worth visiting for its local colour and for the multitude of local markets offering the best shopping in the region.
